You have cleaned the shower glass three times this month. You tried the spray that promised streak-free results, then white vinegar, then a baking soda paste that took twenty minutes to rinse out. The glass looks better for about a day. Then the haze creeps back, and it never quite returns to clear.
Here is the part almost nobody explains: some of what you are looking at will never come off. Not with a stronger cleaner, not with more scrubbing, and not by hiring someone. Hard water leaves two very different things behind on glass, and only one of them is sitting on the surface. The other is damage to the glass itself.
Knowing which one you have changes what you buy, how hard you scrub, and whether you are about to spend a Saturday making the problem permanently worse.

What hard water actually is
Hardness is simply the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in your water, reported in milligrams per litre as calcium carbonate. Health Canada groups it into four bands: soft at 0 to 60 mg/L, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180, and very hard above 180.
Notably, Health Canada sets no aesthetic objective for hardness at all. It is not treated as a safety parameter. The federal guidance frames it as a nuisance and an economic burden, and the reasoning is mechanical rather than medical: hard water, in Health Canada's words, requires a considerable amount of soap to produce a lather, and it also causes scaling of hot water pipes, boilers and other household appliances.
Toronto draws its drinking water from Lake Ontario and treats it at four plants: R.C. Harris, R.L. Clark, F.J. Horgan and the Island plant. Those plants test the supply exhaustively and the City publishes the results every year. What those reports do not publish is a hardness figure.
That absence is worth knowing about, because most of the hardness numbers circulating for this city come from companies that sell water softeners. We are not going to repeat a figure we cannot trace back to the City's own testing. Two different problems, one cloudy pane

Stage one: mineral deposits
A droplet dries on the glass. The water leaves; the calcium and magnesium it was carrying do not. Repeat that a few hundred times and you have a layer of mineral scale bonded to the surface. This is genuinely a deposit. It sits on top of the glass, and with the right approach it comes off.
Stage two: the glass begins to dissolve
Left in contact with water, ordinary soda-lime-silica glass starts giving up material. Water leaches sodium ions out of the glass, and that reaction releases hydroxide ions which steadily raise the pH of the thin film of water sitting on the pane. Once that pH reaches roughly 9.0, the hydroxide begins attacking the silicate structure directly. The industry description of what follows is blunt: the severing of silicon-oxygen bonds, meaning the glass itself is slowly dissolved.
What you see afterwards is microscopic pitting, sometimes a faint rainbow iridescence, sometimes a dense translucent haze. It is not on the glass. It is the glass. And the technical guidance on reversing it is equally blunt: restoring the pristine surface quality to severely corroded glass is at best a formidable task.
How to tell which one you have
Wet the pane and watch it. Mineral deposits become nearly invisible while the glass is wet, because water fills the rough deposit layer and light passes through cleanly again. As it dries, the cloudiness returns. Etching does the opposite: it stays visible wet or dry, because the surface itself is pitted.
Run a fingertip across it. Scale feels gritty and slightly raised, often crusty near the bottom of the door where water pools longest. Corroded glass feels smooth but looks dull, as though someone breathed on it and the fog never cleared.
Look for iridescence. A faint oil-slick rainbow in certain light is a corrosion signature, not a soap scum signature. If you see it, stop scrubbing. More abrasion will not help and can deepen the damage.
Removing deposits before they become damage
For glass still in the deposit stage, the glass industry's own recommendation for light corrosion is acidic detergents, or fine abrasives such as pumice or cerium oxide. In a household context that means a mild acid to dissolve the carbonate, applied with patience rather than force.
Three cautions matter more than the choice of product. Test any acid in a low corner first and give it several minutes, because what is harmless on plain tempered glass can ruin a coated panel. Never combine an acidic cleaner with anything containing bleach; that mixture releases chlorine gas in a small, poorly ventilated room. And check whether your shower has a factory-applied hydrophobic coating, which is common in newer Toronto condo builds. Abrasives strip those coatings permanently, and the coating is usually the only reason the glass was staying clear.

The only thing that reliably prevents it
No cleaner prevents hard water damage. Prevention is entirely a matter of not letting water sit on glass, and it takes about twenty seconds.
Squeegee the panel after every shower, top to bottom, including the inside of the door and the bottom track where water lingers longest. Run the exhaust fan during the shower and for at least twenty minutes afterward, so the residual film evaporates into moving air rather than drying in place. Wipe the frame and hinges, which hold water considerably longer than the glass does.
It is unglamorous, and it is the entire answer. A pane squeegeed daily can go years without meaningful buildup. A pane that never is will begin corroding within months, no matter how good the cleaner under the sink.
